The Singapore HeritageFest 2016: Week One

The Singapore HeritageFest (SHF) is back, and it’s the perfect festival for discovering hidden and lesser-known stories about Singapore’s heritage in fun and immersive ways! With more than 130 programmes taking place all over the island – and even on offshore island Pulau Ubin! – from 29 Apr to 15 May, there’s sure to be something to pique your interest. Here are five of the events we’re looking forward to the most from the first week of SHF – tune in next week for more!


A Taste of Heritage

Date & Time: Fri & Sat, 29 & 30 Apr | 6 – 10pm

Venue: National Museum of Singapore, Front Lawn

Singapore’s hawker heritage is world-renowned, but did you know that food stalls used to line the grounds of the National Museum in the 1960s? Relive the 1960s street food culture at the museum over the festival opening weekend! Indulge in popular local dishes such as Indian rojak, wanton noodles and satay as you enjoy live performances on the museum’s front lawn. You can even learn about the family stories behind the various stalls and how their traditional recipes have been passed down through the generations, as the stalls will be operated by 15 second- and third-generation hawkers who have taken on their family businesses.

*Come dressed in 1960s vintage wear to enjoy 1 free drink (with purchase of 2 drinks) at the Joo Gwee drink stall.

Join us on board our storytelling van as we journey through Singapore’s past! Enjoy the scenic view of the Civic District and take a closer look at the magnificent structures that we have inherited from the era of Sir Stamford Raffles. From the grand National Museum to the old Supreme Court and the many bridges by the Singapore River, discover stories about these iconic sites that give downtown Singapore its character and remind us of our heritage.

Clan Open Houses

Date & Time: Various Dates & Times

Venue: Various clans

Chinese clan associations played a major, historical role in helping new immigrants from various parts of China settle in Singapore. By banding together, a sense of kinship and belonging was fostered. Clan associations also provided help securing jobs and accommodation – essential for the young migrants hoping to escape poverty. This year, as part of SHF, you’ll have the opportunity to step into the historically rich spaces that are home to Chinese clans along Bukit Pasoh and enjoy exciting programmes organised by the clans. Participating clans include: Ee Hoe Hean Club, Tung On Wui Kun, Singapore Chin Woo Athletic Association, Chin Kang Huay Kuan, Kong Chow Wui Koon, Gan Clan Singapore, United Chinese Library and others.

 


Urban Ventures @ Keong Saik Road

Organised by Lopelab in conjunction with Singapore HeritageFest 2016

Date & Time: Sat, 30 Apr | 4pm onwards (Indoor after-party from 10.30pm onwards)

Venue: Keong Saik Road

Experience a reimagining of public spaces and discover the transformative powers of design at Urban Ventures. Watch as Keong Saik Road is transformed into an arts carnival with interactive installations, art performances and creative workshops. In the evening, the streets will come alive with music, drinks and dance performances. In a programme specially created for Singapore HeritageFest 2016, artists will also present artworks that explore the history and lives of people who lived through the ages in Keong Saik.


Bukit Pasoh Outdoor Performance

Date & Time: Sat & Sun, 30 Apr & 1 May | 6pm onwards

Various Venues along Bukit Pasoh Street

Enjoy a series of evening outdoor performances along Bukit Pasoh Street that includes a wushu demonstration, lion dance, Nanyin music, Chinese dance and more. Be entertained by local bands and take a selfie with roving characters dressed in period costumes dating back to the early days of Singapore.
