The Must-Have Apps for Tourists in Singapore

It’s no exaggeration to say that smartphone apps have become an essential part of our lives. They’ve taken over many aspects such as online banking or buying tickets, making these processes so much easier and more convenient. They’ve also provided us with new capabilities, such as discovering the best food and entertainment in your area. Suffice to say, there’s probably an app out there for just about anything you can think of.

As one of the most developed countries in the Asia Pacific region, Singapore has a thriving digital scene of its own. If you’re planning a holiday in this sunny city state, there are a number of smartphone apps that can be of great help (or just simply good fun) on your trip. Here’s our pick of the lot.

GrabTaxi

If you’re looking to get a taxi at the height of morning or evening rush hour, your best bet might be to simply book one. There are several taxi booking apps in Singapore, which are all useful in their own ways.

One of the more popular taxi booking apps here is GrabTaxi. Users simply need to enter their current location and intended destination, and the app will help to flag for taxis in the vicinity to come pick them up. Taxi drivers who have downloaded the app will be able to see the pickup details on their smartphone. With its user-friendly interface and significant pool of taxi drivers, it’s no wonder GrabTaxi has emerged as a firm favourite amongst Singapore users.

Summon Auntie

If you’re driving in Singapore, you may need to park in one of the many public carparks here. To pay for your parking time in open-air carparks, you just need to buy and put up a parking coupon.

The Summon Auntie (pronounced sah-mahn) here refers to parking attendants that go around checking if drivers have parked their cars beyond the time allotted on their coupons. This little app can help you avoid getting a fine for such parking offences, as fellow drivers can alert you when they spot said Summon Aunties in your vicinity.

LimSimi

Coffeeshops are an ubiquitous sight in Singapore where you can get good and affordable local food and drinks. However, ordering a coffee or tea here is not quite so simple if you don’t understand the local vernacular.

Can’t tell the different between kopi or a kopi-o? Then, LimSimi (which means ‘what are you drinking’ in one of the local Chinese dialects) is the app to solve your problem. The app will show you how to order coffee and tea – in all its different variants – like a true-blue Singaporean. Alternatively, check out our guide on how to order kopitiam drinks here!

Hosay!

If English is the official working language in Singapore, then Singlish is the unofficial language of common Singaporeans, containing local colloquialisms that reflect its multicultural heritage.

Hosay! is a fun little iOS app that will teach you all manners of Singlish phrases and possibly give you a peek into the local culture too. And while it’s not the only Singlish phrasebook/dictionary out there in the apps marketplace, it gets top marks from us for its humorous and cheeky design.

Do You Know Singapore?

Available on both the iOS and Android platforms, Do You Know Singapore? is a fun and quirky little app that will quiz on how well you know this island state. It’s packed with hundreds of pictures of Singaporean foods, games, locations, celebrities and many more, and is a wonderful way to learn more about the country, or just simply to pass the time while travelling about.

Here Got Sale, Happy Hours  – Singapore

It’s always good to know just where the best deals are here in Singapore. There are two apps that do just that. One of them is Here Got Sale Singapore, which is available on the iOS platform only. This app lists all the latest sales and promotions from top retailers, major warehouse and clearance sales, as well as discounts at selected smaller retailers. With this, you can go where the best bargains are and make the best use of your time on holiday.

Then, there’s also Happy Hours Singapore, which provides users with a list of pubs and clubs with great happy hour offers. Available on both iOS and Android, this nifty little app also comes with a map feature to help you navigate to your preferred watering hole too.

Did You Know?

While Singapore is a pretty clean and green country, there will be some places where the restrooms are not necessarily in the best condition. To help you avoid these spots, the Restroom Association of Singapore (RAS) has developed the Loo Connect app, which allows users to rate the condition of public restrooms around the island, whether good or less than ideal.
