Hidden Gems

Singapore has its own secrets. Here, we unveil four of the city’s most interesting off-the-beaten-path locations. Ranging from lush green hills to crystal clear waters, these places are well worth taking the road less travelled.

Southern Ridges

Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park or Kent Ridge Park
Nearest MRT Station: Harbourfront

The Southern Ridges is a 9 kilometre (5.6 miles) trail spanning Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park and Kent Ridge Park. Each park has its own distinct character. Mount Faber Park is most famous for its cable car station to Sentosa and its intimate, elegant restaurants and bars. The scenic Telok Blangah Hill Park is a favourite photoshoot venue for wedding couples while Kent Ridge Park’s rich flora and fauna makes it a haven for nature enthusiasts.

One of the most eye-catching features at the Southern Ridges is Henderson Waves, Singapore’s highest pedestrian bridge. Its distinctive undulating structure connects Mount Faber Park to Telok Blangah Hill Park. Another distinctive connector at the Southern Ridges is the Alexandra Arch, which links the Hilltop Walk and the Forest Walk. Both bridges are lit up with LED lights at night, meaning there will be something to enjoy even if you head there after dinner to walk off the meal. Don’t neglect the numerous trails that crisscross the parks! They include canopy walks, a gardening hub and a floral walk, offering visitors plenty of wildlife watching spots and a myriad of photo opportunities.

Tampines Eco Green

Tampines North
Nearest MRT Station: Tampines

Healthy rustic recreation and outdoor education takes on a new face with Tampines Eco Green. Tampines Eco Green, a S$3 million development project of the National Parks Singapore, is located at Tampines North, adjacent to the Tampines Bike Trail. All these were constructed out of recycled materials and environment-safe products.

The park has bird hides, green roofs on all their shelters and vegetated swales. Currently, it houses 70 species of birds, 13 species of dragonflies, 12 species of butterflies and 32 species of spiders.

A tiny scenic island located off the southern coast of Singapore, Pulau Hantu is home to sheltered beaches, lagoons and sparkling blue waters. It is a popular fishing and swimming expanse for locals as well as a renowned ground for campers and day-trippers. One can also make the most out of its clear waters, rich reefs and abundant marine life by snorkelling and scuba diving. To get there, you need to hire a private boat service from the Marina South Pier. However, if you decide to camp overnight, you need to get a permit from the Sentosa Leisure Group.

Kranji Farms

Nearest MRT Station: Kranji

Tucked away in the north-western corner of Singapore is the suburb of Kranji. Unknown to most visitors and even some Singaporeans, this quiet corner of Singapore houses a multitude of farms, most of which offer guided educational tours with family-friendly activities. Getting there is easier than you might think as there is a shuttle service that operates from Kranji MRT Station, offering easy access to all farms.

From organic agricultural to animal, there is a variety of farms plying their trade here. Several of the agricultural farms operate casual eateries using their own fresh produce. The fish farms, on the other hand, offer activities such as prawn fishing, feeding of the aquatic animals and even a “fish spa treatment” where you soak your feet in a pool with toothless fish. The toothless fish gently nibble the dead skin off your feet, leaving you with softer, cleaner and healthier feet. The fish farms also have activities that recreate the retro kampong (village) feel of an older Singapore. If you choose to, you can also opt for a farm-stay experience.
