Events in May 2016

More exciting events await this May! Discover little known facets of Singapore’s history, watch a blockbuster musical, laugh at local comedy and spend time with your loved ones at the highlighted events this month.


Singapore HeritageFest 2016

The highly anticipated Singapore HeritageFest (SHF) 2016 is back with its 13th edition! From 29 April to 15 May, look forward to exciting programmes that celebrate our local heritage, and embark on a discovery of hidden and lesser-known stories about Singapore with the National Heritage Board.

Over three weekends, expect to go back in time with a bustling hawker street reminiscent of the 1960s at the National Museum of Singapore; discover tales of Bukit Pasoh and old-time Bedok; and join us as we explore Singapore’s last living kampong, Pulau Ubin, through guided trails, music performances and film screenings under the stars!

FoodCine.ma 2016

For something different, foodies should check out FoodCine.ma – a film festival on food. Presented by the creators of A Design Film Festival, it is a wide-angle, round-table take on contemporary food culture and subcultures. Eight feature-length films selected from over 80 international submissions are to form the main body of work presented at this FoodCine.ma. The festival programme also includes satellite screenings that are paired with film-inspired menus, exhibitions on food culture, and a talk-show on the creative relationships between food, film and design.

Shakespeare in the Park: Romeo & Juliet

Spread your picnic blanket under the stars and enjoy a romantic night out with the Bard. The next installment of the Singapore Repertory Theatre’s wildly successful Shakespeare in the Park series is here – be swept away by the tragedy and romance of Romeo and Juliet from now to 22 May. Directed by internationally renowned director Daniel Slater, with a set designed by Francis O’ Connor, this iteration of the classic love story is set against a modern backdrop of steel and concrete.

A Fullerton Love Story Tour

The beautiful Fullerton Hotel is a building with a long history behind it. It has been gazetted a National Monument, and used to be the General Post Office during Singapore’s colonial period. In this tour, you’ll get the opportunity to explore various nooks and crannies, and even scale the rooftop of this historical monument. With thespians Dwayne Lau and Jo Tan playing the roles of a postman and a civil servant respectively, you will find yourself in the middle of a love story on this tour. End the heritage tour on a sweet note with Fullerton Hotel’s famous chocolate buffet.

Where the River Always Flows by TENG Ensemble

The TENG Ensemble is a group of artists consisting of Gerald Teo on cello/gehu, Huang Peh Linde as the sound artist, James Fernando on guitar, Phua Ee Kia as countertenor, Dr Samuel Wong on the pipa and Yang Ji Wei on the sheng. The TENG Ensemble uses this unique combination of Western and Chinese instruments and will be performing a selection of Singaporean heritage music at this free concert. Reinvented versions of Munnaeru Vaalibaa and Chan Mali Chan will be played, and there will be other pieces drawing inspiration from Malay, Portuguese, Korean and English folk songs that are popular in the region.

Meenah and Cheenah

Malay meets Chinese in this affectionate celebration of cultural differences and unlikely friendships. Directed by theatre veteran Selena Tan and written by Singapore’s enfant terrible Alfian Sa’at, Meenah and Cheenah stars two of Singapore's finest comic performers - Siti Khalijah Zainal and Judee Tan. Get ready for belly-aching laughs as they portray teenaged delinquents in school, middle aged aunties on their first budget airline trip out of Singapore and frenemies who try to one up each other by comparing boyfriends in a series of sketches.

SAVOUR Gourmet

The first of the SAVOUR series this year (the other two are SAVOUR Wines and SAVOUR Christmas in September and November respectively), SAVOUR Gourmet brings together all things culinary. With amazing produce flown in from all over the world, specialty cocktails and special dishes created by some of the hottest chefs in Singapore’s restaurant scene, you can craft the SAVOUR experience you want. What’s more, entry to the festival grounds is free this year!

Bubble Glow 5K

It’s time to test the results of your New Year resolution to get fit! Join the Bubble Glow 5K run and experience a run with a riot of colours like you’ve never seen before! Deck yourself out with UV face paint and temporary tattoos before playing with waves of UV coloured bubbles that are water based and non-toxic. Les Misérables

If you haven’t had the chance to catch this spectacular musical, now’s your chance. Produced by Cameron Mackintosh, who was also behind other blockbuster theatrical performances such as Cats, Miss Saigon, Phantom of the Opera, Oliver! and Mary Poppins, Les Mis is an epic and uplifting story about the survival of the human spirit. With all new staging, orchestrations and reimagined scenery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo himself, the new Les Mis is not to be missed.
