Painting with Light: Southeast Asian Film Series

Southeast Asian film has a history spanning over a hundred years, and Painting with Light shines the spotlight on the best cinematic stories from this period. This is the inaugural edition of Painting with Light, and it pairs a classic and a contemporary film from a national cinema in Southeast Asia. Curated by Philip Cheah, both films will focus on the same issue, showing how society’s views have changed – or not.

Ge Tai - The Musical 歌台音乐剧

Getai – literally “musical stage” – is a loud, boisterous and colourful performance of song and dance that usually takes place during the lunar seventh month. Ge Tai – The Musical brings the audience backstage and shows what actually goes on behind the scenes. Starring local getai stars Desmond Ng and Hao Hao, other getai stars making an appearance in this musical include the Baobei Sisters and international stars such as Sakura Teng, Zhuan Xue Zhong and Yang Xiao Ping.

Shakespeare Lives in Film

2016 marks the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death, and The Artshouse is showcasing six classic film adaptations of his work. Witness for yourself Laurence Olivier’s Academy Award winning performance as Hamlet and the ground breaking casting of Laurence Fishburne as Othello, the first major cinematic production of the work to cast an African-American in the title role.

Madagascar Live!
