10 Events to Check Out at the Singapore Night Festival 2016

The iconic Singapore Night Festival is back at the historic Bras Basah.Bugis precinct! This year’s theme is Inventions and Innovation, and it celebrates the passion of creation. Returning for a spectacular ninth edition, visitors can join the revelry as science fiction and fantasy intertwine in unforgettable performances and light art, inspired by the zeal that drove inventors in their quest to discover the new and unconventional.  Look forward to an exciting line-up of immersive activities and performances from local and international acts! Here are some of the highlights we’re most looking forward to.


Singapore Night Festival ez-link Collector’s Edition Card

ez-link cards are the best way to get around Singapore’s on its public transport network, but did you know that there are limited edition ez-link cards? There have been collaborations with movies, Sanrio characters, Marvel superheroes… and this year, for the first time, the Singapore Night Festival has its own Festival Collector’s Edition ez-link card! Purchase the card at the Visitor Services counter at the National Museum of Singapore from 15 to 27 August 2016 and stand a chance to win prizes including hotel stays, dim sum buffets, dining vouchers and more! You can also use your newly purchased ez-link card and “tap to donate”. Make a $2 donation with your ez-link card and get a LEGO brick to add on to a wall installation by Singapore artist Xylvie Huang and be part of the Singapore Night Festival LEGO Wall Installation. All donations go towards “building” the Singapore Night Festival 2017.

Invasion is an unforgettable, moving street spectacle that immerses the audience in a magical atmosphere. A mythical world comes alive with large animals roving among the public and a prehistoric bird flying overhead. Chaos ensues when magical creatures flock in. Will you run or will you follow?

An absurd, poetic and disturbing image of two men whose heads are stuck inside a jar of swimming goldfish. They wander about town, questioning passers-by who thus become participants in this comical yet disconcerting act. Dressed in suits, they could be ordinary tourists, if not for the bowl around their heads, rendering communication next to impossible. The question asked is a fundamental one – how do we connect with each other when barriers are up?

Explore the Peranakan Museum after hours with your family and friends while you enjoy “inventions and innovation” at the Singapore Night Festival. Be sure to visit the special exhibition Nyonya Needlework: Beadwork and Embroidery in the Peranakan World.

The Bloc Party @ Armenian Street will be THE party to be at during the Singapore Night Festival 2016. Come explore the coming together of an assortment of electrifying programmes at the Armenian Street ranging from motorcycle convoys to a selection of back-to-back music acts called Isms & Schisms presented by The Substation. This year, visitors to The Bloc Party @ Armenian Street are set for a multi-disciplined treat.

On the first weekend, listen out for the deep rumbles of the motorcycle convoy led by Harley Davidson Singapore, hold your own in a light saber battle by FightSaber Singapore, and dance to the beats of roving percussion band Rhythm de Passion. Then, return on the second weekend for the acapella tunes of Vocal XTC, and watch Main Wayang at the Main Stage on Armenian Street brought to you by Peranakan Museum.

The House of Curiosities is an event featuring performance, activities and more. Based on the storyline of The Mechanical Heart, it is a story of adventure, curious man-made machines and the wonderful capacity of the human mind and spirit to discover and invent. Professor Chambers is a celebrated explorer and inventor. With his son Christopher, he builds a time machine that takes them on an expedition to find crystal caves in the subterranean depths. On the journey back, a monstrous octopus attacks them, injures Christopher and escapes. The devious octopus is a man-made contraption, but who is behind it? Find out in this exhilarating performance.


REVOLUTION – Arts Busk 2016 |PoMo

PoMo is proud to present REVOLUTION – Arts Busk 2016. Immerse yourself in this steampunk-inspired event filled with fun activities! Enjoy free snacks while appreciating street performances, or hop around the Makers Market featuring more than 20 stalls with locally crafted design products. Don’t forget to support our homegrown student artists from LASALLE and NAFA at PoMo d’Art, where they will demonstrate and showcase their exquisite artworks!


FESTIVAL VILLAGE: STAGE

Weekend Noise is back at the first weekend of the Singapore Night Festival this year with a stellar line-up of Noise alumni musicians and three Australian emerging acts! Featuring acts like Stopgap, Linying and HubbaBubbas from past Noise Singapore music mentorships, and emerging Australian acts – Alice Ivy, Tali Mahoney and Frida, this weekend will be an amazing mix of eclectic styles of music, from both within our shores and beyond taking the stage.


JOURNEY | NOVAK (United Kingdom)

Front Lawn, Singapore Art Museum

19, 20, 26, 27 August 2016, 7.30pm – 2am | 21 –25 August 2016, 7.30pm – 11pm

Catch the dynamic projection-mapping performance inspired by the world of Victorian novelist Jules Verne, known for his creation of a world reflecting the future of Victorian invention and fantasy. NOVAK reinterprets seven of his novels to create a unique adventure dynamically projection-mapped to fit the façade of SAM, including an exploration of Singapore’s art and culture.

Highlighting the use of invention to enable adventure, the viewer will be taken on a magical adventure through a series of scenes, each depicting a different landscape, relating to the environments that feature so vividly in Verne’s classic novels.


River of Time | Mascots and Puppets Specialists

Specially created for this year’s Singapore Night Festival, this spectacular show is not to be missed! River of Time is a performance that reflects the birth and evolution of sea creatures in relation to man. This immersive show uses lights, shadows and various puppetry styles to reflect the unique and wonderful lifeforms through the River of Time.
