Beyond Mainstream

Be an Escape Artist for a Day!

If you’ve ever dreamt of being a secret agent or an invincible spy, it’s time to make that fantasy come true. Imagine being trapped in a small, dark room, racing against time as you piece clues together to make your escape from the clutches of evil villains. You get to take on roles like those of FBI agents, spies, prisoners and crime scene investigators to escape serial killers, mad scientists, kidnappers, bloodthirsty vampires or aliens before time runs out. Think of it as playing a computer game or watching a mystery-thriller flick, but with one difference – it's happening to you in real life.

The Concept

Known as real-life escape room games, these puzzle rooms are catching on fast in Singapore. They cater to a wide pool of audience, from families and groups of friends to students and corporate customers. Players have to escape from cleverly-designed rooms by solving brainteasers and cryptology puzzles using hidden clues within a limited timeframe (usually around an hour).

Games are set in a variety of scenarios and difficulty levels. Lockdown.SG’s kidnap and bailout scenarios will trigger your logical thinking skills as you assume the roles of kidnapped hitchhikers and framed criminals, while BreakOut Games tests your eye for detail and teamwork when escaping from captors such as paranoid scientists and betrayed magicians. If you want to take the scare factor up a notch, check out The Escape Artist’s Level 13.5, a trapped-in-lift scenario in a haunted hotel, and Jack the Ripper – the name tells all.

Physical abilities aren’t the star of the show here, and this means that pretty much anyone can play. In fact, according to Mr Jonathan Ye, spokesperson of Lockdown.SG, families make up a large proportion of his customer base, and children have been proven to be quite adept at solving puzzles, sometimes even faring better than adults.

Mr Ivan Tan, Business Development Manager of The Escape Artist attributes the rising popularity of such games to a combination of factors such as well-designed puzzles and engaging storylines. The experience of having the essence of a great virtual game incorporated into a real-life scenario is a huge draw as well. "After all, who doesn't want to be the hero for a day?"

We don’t want to offer too many spoilers, but you can expect props like screwdrivers, secret compartments and thumbdrive locks, just to name a few! Sessions usually last for an hour each, and prices range from S$12 to S$30.

So, what are the traits that make a top-notch escape artist? Communication, problem solving, teamwork and an ability to think out of the box are all part of the package. Rational thinkers have proven to be assets to their teams. “Good escape artists are usually more observant and analytical. They are not rash and usually think before they act,” says Mr Ye. One of the common pitfalls is lack of communication. “Very often, players see something strange but don't share their discovery with the rest of the team,” says Mr Zhuo Zhengjie, Director of BreakOut Games. “Sometimes players get stuck at some puzzles but don't pass them on to another player in the team.”

Puzzle rooms are usually equipped with telephones or help buttons so that the participants can seek help in the form of hints. Every effort is made to ensure the players’ safety. For example, BreakOut Games' rooms are monitored via CCTV, and players can use the emergency exit key if they need to.
